The Between Farm and Table Series - supporting food, feeding, and farms
I recently moved from the city of Atlanta, GA to the more rural town of Charlotte, Vermont. In moving here I was immediately inspired by the pastoral landscape and the abundance of farms and farm stands. These amazing farm stands offered a bountiful and beautiful array of fruits and vegetables, which provided much painting inspiration. However, what began as beautiful inspiration became an excellent learning opportunity. In learning more about the land and produce of Vermont, I also learned about the issue of food insecurity. βThe USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life.β (https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/food-insecurity , 2023) Thus despite the abundance of food production in this country many people lack access physically and financially to food, particularly fruits, vegetables and other nutrient rich foods. This problem has only been made worse by the pandemic. There are many ways people are trying to help end food insecurity and address the gap between food production and access for all people. One such way is called gleaning, which involves the collection of food produced on farms, as well as grocery stores, restaurants, etc that might otherwise go to waste and give it to those struggling with food insecurity. (to learn more check out: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/usda_gleaning_toolkit.pdf)
This series of painting attempts to capture not only the beauty of fruits and vegetables, but is also a reflection of the gap between the production of food and the needs of people. How can we work to narrow the gap between farm and table, particular for those in need. I am currently donating 10% of the sales of these works to local gleaning and food rescue program
